Three acronyms get quoted for the same t-shirt, and they are not three flavors of one process. They are three different physical relationships between ink and cloth. One soaks into the fibers. One sits on top in thick cured layers. One arrives as a printed film glued down with heat. Picture that and the choice mostly makes itself.

DTG puts the ink into the shirt

Direct-to-garment sprays water-based pigment straight onto the cotton, where the fibers absorb it and heat sets it. There is no separate layer to feel: run a hand over a good DTG print and you feel knit, not print. Because it is essentially inkjet, it handles photographic detail, soft gradients and unlimited colors with no setup, and prints one unit as happily as five hundred.

It needs cotton, and it rewards a well-made blank. A combed, tightly knit surface holds fine detail that a coarse one blurs. For a big chest or back graphic, this is the finish most people are picturing when they say a print looks premium. Every other route trades something away for a reason.

Screen print has earned its reputation

Screen print is genuinely excellent. Ink is pushed through a mesh stencil in thick deposits, which gives an opacity nothing else matches: a dense white on black cotton, a spot color that reads across a room. Cured properly it is the toughest finish in the business. It is also the only route to effects with real height, puff and high-density, where the ink stands off the surface enough to catch a fingernail. At volume it is the cheapest per unit by far.

Its drawback is economic, not qualitative. Every color in the artwork needs its own screen burned and registered before a single shirt runs. That cost spreads across the run, which is why screen print asks for a minimum and punishes an unproven design. Sell through and the value is outstanding. Guess wrong and you own boxes of a graphic nobody asked for.

Large DTF prints are where it falls down

Direct-to-film prints the artwork onto a plastic carrier sheet, dusts the wet ink with hot-melt adhesive powder, then presses that whole package onto the garment. What ends up on the shirt is pigment plus glue sitting on the fabric, not in it. At small sizes that is invisible. Across a big full-front block, the material shows its character:

  • It does not breathe. A large solid area seals the knit, so air stops moving through that panel the way it does through bare cotton.

  • It stiffens the drape. The cotton around the print moves and the printed panel does not.

  • It creases. Folded in a drawer or across the body, the film takes a line the fabric around it does not.

  • It fails at the edges first. A knit stretches in every direction and the film can only flex so far, so lifting starts at the corners and edges.

Hold a DTF tee up to a window: the print blocks the light as a solid patch, with the outline of the film often visible around the artwork. Ink that lives in the fibers lets light through unevenly, the way dyed cloth does.

Where DTF is the right tool

Small applications are what it is built for. A tagless label printed inside the collar gives you branding with nothing to scratch. Care instructions, a small left-chest or sleeve hit. It also bonds to fabrics water-based ink cannot hold at all: polyester, fleece, nylon, technical blends, caps and totes. DTG needs cotton. DTF does not care. On a four-centimeter neck label there is no sheet of plastic to complain about, because there is barely a sheet.

So: DTG for the big graphic, screen print when the volume justifies the screens, DTF for the small stuff and awkward fabrics. Most drops use two of the three, which is fine, as long as each is doing the job it is good at.
