Calculate an honest per-order contribution margin before deciding whether a premium tee or hoodie has a viable selling price.

The number to calculate
Start with contribution per order: selling price minus garment, decoration, branded extras, payment and platform fees, shipping subsidy and a realistic allowance for returns or replacements. Then subtract the customer-acquisition cost for orders you pay to win. What remains must also support fixed business expenses and profit. Gross revenue is not gross profit, and gross profit is not take-home income.
A simple example
Suppose a tee sells for $60. The blank and print cost $20, packaging $2, the payment and platform costs total $4, and you subsidize shipping by $6. Before acquisition and returns, contribution is $28. If acquiring the order costs $15 and you allow $3 for replacements, it is $10. These are example inputs, not Airventory price quotes or a promised margin. Use your actual checkout and supplier rates.
Why premium prices need premium evidence
A $60–$90 tee can work only if the intended buyer understands the garment’s fit, fabric, construction, design and brand. Do not set a high price solely because a calculator says the margin is attractive. Buy and photograph the finished product, compare it with the alternatives your customer shops, and test conversion at several credible prices. Discounting from an arbitrary list price is not a substitute for value.
Break even on a campaign
For a launch campaign, divide fixed campaign cost by contribution per acquired order. If creative and setup cost $1,000 and each acquired order contributes $10 after variable costs, you need 100 such orders to recover that campaign cost. If the result is unrealistic, improve product value, cost, shipping economics or retention before increasing ad spend.
What if you offer free shipping?
Free shipping to the buyer still costs the business money. Put the expected shipping subsidy in the per-order calculation and consider different destinations. A $60 tee with $6 domestic shipping support may have a different margin when sent internationally. Bundle pricing can lift order value, but only if extra production and shipment costs are included.
Run three scenarios: expected price and costs, a slower-sales case with a higher acquisition cost, and a return-heavy case. If your margin disappears under modest pressure, refine the product or marketing plan before scaling. A calculator is an assumption tester, not a revenue forecast.
